The Girl from Ipanema performed by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto.
New York, March 18 & 19, 1963: João Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz in the recording studio. Also in the studio but not mentioned on the cover: Astrud Gilberto.
Intro
I love music and I am a Jazz fan. Since my teens I buy and collect recordings, first vinyl and then CD’s.
Today I like to present you an essential Bossa Nova song and Cool Jazz recording. This could become the start point of your Jazz record collection.
The Song
Antônio Carlos Jobim composed this song in 1962 in the style of Bossa Nova. The original lyrics have been written by Vinícius de Moraes in Portuguese and the Portuguese title is Garota de Ipanema. Norman Gimbel is the creator of the English lyrics.
The song only became really popular when it was recorded with sax player Stan Getz and guitarist João Gilberto.
Vinyl or CD?
They are both fine. You see this means you should own a HiFi / stereo system 😉
A stereo system is a statement piece showing you are not this ordinary person streaming mainstream music and is listening on headphones.
The Recording
The song begins gently with the guitar and Portuguese vocals of João Gilberto. Then the bassist Sebastião Neto enters very tastefully. This is followed by the composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on the piano. João Gilberto then stops singing and Astrud Gilberto begins with the English text. Finally, Stan Getz enters with his powerful tenor saxophone.
I was blown away when I heard this piece for the first time. Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz are fantastic.
The Musicians
João Gilberto on guitar and Portugues vocals, Stan Getz on tenor sax, composer Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano.
Not mentioned on the cover: Astrud Gilberto English vocals and Sebastião Neto on bass.
Notes about the Recording
Astrud Gilberto became a super star with this recording. She was not supposed to sing on this recording: she knew English, that’s why she sang and not João Gilberto.
My Recommendations
I recommend vinyl or CD. Steaming is ok too 😉
